Disaster Preparedness

Elder Services of Okaloosa County is a Social Services agency which is a partner with Okaloosa County Emergency management Services and other county agencies and organizations in assisting and assuring the safety and welfare of the 60+ population of the county.

Agency responsibilities include planning, coordinating and providing services throughout the County. Although most situations are storm related, the Agency responds to all emergency situations when requested by Emergency Management Services or local authorities.

An Agency designee sits on County's Disaster Preparedness team and receives all bulletins and updates. Personnel work closely with EMS, Health Department, Board of County Commissioners and all regulatory agencies to assure the safety of agency clients.

Staff will provide information to all persons receiving services from this agency on the recommended preparations for weather emergencies or other disasters. Seniors are assisted in identifying and gathering the recommended items for their personal evacuation kits. All persons are encouraged to prearrange evacuation and shelter plans with family or friends to reduce stress and anxiety. When this option is not available, seniors are provided a number to call for assistance.

Seniors who are living alone, those determined to be at-risk and families caring for terminally ill or dementia victims will be assisted by staff in registering with Emergency Management. Additionally, staff will update information with Okaloosa County Transit for those who require assistance with evacuation.

Staff will contact clients when an emergency is declared. They will provide guidance and assistance to assure clients are safe. They will maintain contact throughout the storm as communications will permit. Once the emergency has passed, staff will immediately initiate efforts to make contact with all clients and support the efforts of the Emergency Management office in verifying client status.
