Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver food every weekday, Monday through Friday, even on Christmas Eve! In 2025, it was a very good thing that a Meals on Wheels volunteer driver arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen V on Okaloosa Island.
"I had a fall," says Stephen V, a Meals on Wheels recipient. "My wife was at home with me, fortunately, and I remember very little about the incident, but I know I had cut an artery."
The Meals on Wheels driver stayed with the V family until the ambulance arrived.
"I did not really know that particular driver," said Mrs. V, "but he stayed with us and kept us calm until the ambulance arrived. He was a blessing to us."
Mr. and Mrs. V continue to receive Meals on Wheels. "We love the food," says Mrs. V. "I have arthritis and cooking has become difficult for me. The Meals on Wheels food is tasty and very nutritious. We enjoy it."
The Vlahos moved to Fort Walton Beach several years ago to retire. "We love the area and the community. Everyone is so kind," she says.
You can help Meals on Wheels continue to serve families such as these through the United Way of the Emerald Coast and individual contributions.
