Meals on Wheels
Ms. Alma, of Crestview, was enjoying her lasagna and said there was so much she would put the rest up for later. "Peter the MOW volunteer is always polite," she said. "All the volunteers look after me." Elder Services was born when a group of concerned volunteers identified an unmet need with regard to our elder citizens in our communities. They discovered that individuals were going hungry because they were no longer able to cook meals for themselves. Their goal was to provide at least one hot, nutritious meal to supplement their diets. That came to fruition with the award of a United Way grant and the incorporation of Okaloosa County Council on Aging in 1971. Today, Elder Services of Okaloosa County continues to identify and serve our most vulnerable individuals. Our effort is fully supported by United Way of the Emerald Coast. Grant money received is used to purchase the raw food items used in the preparation of meals that are delivered to at-risk elderly and handicapped persons Monday through Friday of each week. We have a long history with United Way of the Emerald Coast and will remain forever appreciative of their commitment and support of our target population. There is little funding for the elderly although they are the fastest growing demographic. Elder Services is recognized as the local provider for services to this special population. Local support of our efforts is critical to our continued mission to keep individuals in the preferred setting of their home. If you are interested in donating to our program or wish to volunteer, please contact us at 850-833-8165 (FWB) or 850-689-7807 (CV). -
THANK YOU UNITED WAY!
Elder Services of Okaloosa County was awarded a $20,000 grant in support of our locally funded Meals on Wheels Program. Elder Services is very appreciative of those who worked so hard to determine the awards to local non-profit organizations. United Way provides incredible support to its partner agencies, and we are honored to have been chosen to represent our at-risk and vulnerable elderly and handicapped population. With the funds, the agency will purchase food items to use in the preparation of meals. Meals are delivered to frail adults by caring volunteers who provide so much more than just a meal. They represent safety, security, and a connection with the community. On behalf of our clients, Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers we say Thank You. -
